On March 20, 2006 in Lviv the 5th session of the Ukrainian – Polish Coordination Council on interregional cooperation was held. The session was headed by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Volodymyr Handogiy and Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration of the Republic Poland Wieslaw Tarka.
Representatives of ministries and departments as well as regional state administrations and provinces of Ukraine and the Republic of Poland took part in the session.
In the course of the session of the Council a wide range of issues of bilateral and multilateral interregional cooperation were discussed. In particular, improvement of frontier traffic and development of infrastructure of the Ukrainian – Polish state frontier, prospect of social and economical development of the boundary territories, employment etc.
The Ukrainian – Polish Coordination Council on interregional cooperation is one of the basic institutional mechanisms of bilateral cooperation at the interregional level. Resumption of work of the Council (the previous one was held in Poland in December 2003) is called up to give impetus to intensification of transfrontier and regional cooperation as one of the most important parts of cooperation of the two countries at the European integration direction.
